Curriculum & Assessment
The West Oso ISD curriculum adheres to state standards in all subjects, including the core areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. We also offer instruction in art, music, and physical education. For more information about state standards and assessments, please follow the links on this page.
WOISD Special Programs
In addition to our regular curriculum, students who qualify have access to the following programs:
Bilingual/ESL Program
Students from non-English speaking families may participate in the Bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL) program. We provide learning materials, support, and encouragement for children as they learn to adapt and function in an English-speaking environment.
The Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP)
The Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) provides for the education and behavioral needs of students who have violated the school district’s Code of Student Conduct.
The mission of the West Oso DAEP is to:
- Provide an opportunity for students to continue their academic coursework and earn admission back into their regular school setting
- Serve disciplinary consequences for their behavior, actions, and choices
- Empower students with skills, strategies, and coping strategies to address various questionable situations they encounter
- Make students responsible for their own actions so they can learn to respect and get along with others
- Allow students to begin building self-esteem and self-discipline

Gifted & Talented
West Oso ISD embraces the philosophy of providing an education in relation to each child’s ability to learn. We understand that gifted and talented students exhibit learning styles that demand challenging experiences outside the educational norm. Therefore, the West Oso ISD gifted program offers alternative methods, which teach, challenge, and expand participants’ knowledge while stressing the development of an independent learner who can question, apply, and generate information.

Assessment/Accountability
In the 2011-12 school year, Texas student assessments changed from TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) to STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). The Texas Education Agency mandates the STAAR testing program.
STAAR for grades 3–8 will continue to assess the same subjects that the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills assessed. Students first enrolled in grade 9 or below in the 2011–12 school year must take the STAAR end-of-course assessments as part of their graduation requirements.
The STAAR EOC assessments test high school students for college readiness and produce performance labels that indicate a student’s mastery of the course’s standards. The end-of-course tests assess the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for a given course. In addition to passing courses, a score of satisfactory or above is required to graduate.
